International activity

Estonian literature is not only distributed within Estonia’s borders. The Estonian Literature Information Centre ( focuses its efforts on introducing Estonian literature and authors abroad and in recent years it has put a lot of stress on educating translators.

Every year about 50 translations of Estonian works of literature are completed. The centre manages a thorough database of Estonian works of literature that have been published elsewhere, of their authors and translators.

Estonian literature at international book fairs

Estonian literature has regularly been present at international book fairs. It is customary to participate in the following exhibits:

In 2012, in addition to participation in the abovementioned exhibits, book presentations and meetings with authors were held at the Leipzig and Paris fairs.

Baltic Book Fair

Each year the Baltic Book Fair is organised in one of the capitals of the Baltic countries. In 2013 the fair took place in Tallinn, in 2014 it will be held in Riga and the year after that in Vilnius.

Estonia as the main guest at international book fairs

Twice Estonian literature has been the main guest at international book fairs – in Gothenburg in 2007 and in Helsinki in 2011. Being chosen as the main guest takes Estonian literature to centre stage for both the publishers as well as the readers and offers wonderful opportunities to translate it into English or other foreign languages in considerable volume.
When Estonia was the main guest at the Helsinki Book Fair in 2011, twenty new Estonian books were published in Finnish, the same as the total of the entire preceding decade.

Participation in international exhibits has helped highlight Estonian literature and promoted several of our authors abroad. Representation of Estonian books and writers at book fairs is a joint effort by the Estonian Literature Information Centre (Eesti Kirjanduse Teabekeskus), the Estonian Children’s Literature Centre (Eesti Lastekirjanduse Keskus) and the Estonian Publishers’ Association (Eesti Kirjastuste Liit). Participation in international book fairs is handled by the Estonian Publishers’ Association, whereas the Estonian Literature Information Centre and the Estonian Children’s Literature Centre are responsible for the content.
Estonian children’s books and illustrators in particular have earned great recognition at international exhibits. This is witnessed by a number of translated works published in Europe and Asia and by international recognition of our authors.
